Khimar is one of the most popular Islamic dress in Bangladesh. You will get a vast collection of Khimar borka on IraniBorkaBazar. All the khimars are designed with international standards. What is khimar: Khimar is a veil worn by practicing Muslim women in order to cover themselves as per the Islamic code of modest dressing. Although the lexical meaning of the word khimar is “covering”, it now refers to a certain style of garment for covering one’s head. It is worn as an outer garment in form of a headgear. Khimar is usually worn by Muslim women of Bangladesh when they are in public or in the presence of ‘non mahram’ men i.e. men outside one’s family. Khimar is different from hijab, chador and burqa: In terms of style and structure, khimar is quite different from some other pieces of Islamic clothing for women such as hijab, chador and burqa that also serve as coverings for one’s head. While chador and burqa provide the wearer with full body coverage as outer garments, khimar is of a smaller size in comparison with them. Unlike hijab that covers the head, neck and only a part of one’s shoulders, khimar covers the head, neck, shoulders and hands as well as some other parts of torso- depending on the length of the khimar. The length of khimar ranges from the chest till the knee, in some cases even longer. Structure of khimar: Khimar is often a large headscarf that is held in place by a fastening under the wearer’s chin. However, longer khimars are usually tailored fabrics sewn as per the wearer’s measurements and requirements. Types of khimar: Khimars are available in a wide variety of colours, sizes and fabrics. It can be bought as a piece of ready-made garment. Other than that, one can also get customized khimars made by tailors and fashion designers. Ready-made khimars are available both in shops and online stores. The price range is variable too. It all depends on its size, design and fabric. There are simple khimars for everyday use besides the embroidered and embellished ones for special occasions. Fabrics for khimar: As it is a headgear as well as an outerwear, the fabrics usually preferred for making khimar are soft, light yet non-transparent so as to maintain the comfort as well as the religious obligation of the wearers. So, the most popular fabric choices for khimar are cotton, silk, satin, rayon, nida, linen, chiffon, crepe, georgette, jersey etc. Evolution of khimar designs: Earlier, the colour and design of khimars lacked variations due to rigid social perception towards religious rules and values. However, this scenario has changed during recent years where khimars with a large array of colours and styles are tried out by numerous observant Muslim women around the world. Muslim women in today’s world tend to bring a harmonious balance of religion and fashion that is reflected in their choice of khimars and other pieces of Islamic clothing. Khimar in the western world: With the increase in participation of Muslim women in educational, professional and economic sectors, the western outlook on Islam has changed by a great extent. Muslim immigrants in western countries have consequently made the western world even more familiar with khimar and other Islamic apparels. This familiarity has also increased the availability of khimar and other such Islamic dresses and accessories in local markets within the reach of the emerging number of Muslim consumers in the cultural melting pot of the global village. Luxury brands like Dolce & Gabbana now have their extended section of clothing for Muslim women that ranges from headscarves and khimars to abayas. Khimar as a style statement: At present, khimar is not a mere symbol of religious obligation but also a style statement. The wearer’s sense of fashion as well as her cultural background is expressed through the design of her khimar. The smart and elegant designs of modern khimars might allure non-Muslim fashionistas towards accepting this modest wear as a trendy essential in the nearest future. Khimar has quite a prestigious position in the world of apparels. The rising popularity of khimar has created immense possibilities for expansion over the horizon of the fashion world.
